NicheThis mushroom is spread throughout Europe and North America. In Europe they grow in different kinds of nutrient-poor grasslands and in North America they grow in woodlands. It is known as a grassland fungus. There has been an extreme loss of butter waxcaps environment across Europe due to the intensification of agriculture. The mushroom gets its nutrients from the soil through their myceliums. It is commonly spoted during autumn just like all the other species in the genus hygrocybe. When they are growing they cannot grow in fertilizer, no disturbance, i.e. reseeding. Due to the increasing loss of unimproved grassland fields, waxcap species in particular have become more restricted in their distribution. There are three action plans trying to help the preservation of these habitats and wildlife. Species Action Plans (SAPs), Habitat Action Plans (HAPs) and Local Biodiversity Action Plans (BAPs) are the differect action plans trying to help currently. Their predatiors are unknown besides humans.
